The resort of Livigno owes its fame from to the fact of being a tax-free area. This privilege was born because the area remained isolated for centuries (especially during the long winters) until 1952, when the Passo del Foscagno opened also during the winter. Because of the geographical location, Livigno was equipped with tax-free benefits since 1805 by Napoleon. Benefits recognized in 1818 by Austria-Hungary, which were confirmed by Italy in 1910 and by the EEC in 1960.

This characteristic attracts many tourists every year who reach the village in order to spend a holiday of fun, and do not miss the opportunity to visit the more than 250 shops for a few hours of leisure with the big names of international fashion stylist with particularly advantageous prices.
