holiday nature and territory

THE NATURE OF LIVIGNO – A PEARL IN ALTA VALTELLINA

In Alta Valtellina, on the border between the Italian and Swiss Alps, you’ll find Livigno surrounded by nature, snow-covered from November to May. We have been holding its nature in our hearts preserving it for you.

THE SUN — OUR SYMBOL

MILANO-CORTINA OLYMPIC GAMES 2026

Our valley is kissed by the sun like few others in the Alps thanks to its southwest-to-northeast positioning. That’s the reason why our symbol is the sun which offers many hours of sunshine on both mountainsides. And when you have a look around you, you realize that everything is about nature and holidays.

We were born in nature and it’s the place where we want to keep growing with innovative but sustainable tourism. We have been working on this for years, which is why we are happy to host the Olympics Milano Cortina 2026. They will be held in the spirit of the IOC's Agenda 2020 for more sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games enhancing existing sites and harmonizing the new ones with the territory.

IN LIVIGNO EVEN CARS RECHARGE AND THE ENVIRONMENT IS GRATEFUL

Not only holidaymakers but also e-bikes and electric cars can get their batteries recharged for free here in Livigno. Public charging stations are available for free in strategic spots in the area and at private facilities, too.

GETTING THE BUS: NO CHARGE AND NO POLLUTION

To lessen pollution caused by cars passing through the valley, a free public bus service has been established for years: four bus lines to move between the two sides and one to connect Livigno to Trepalle.

Within the Stelvio National Park, on the border between Italy and Switzerland, just a few minutes from the town, bounded by the arched Punt dal Gall dam, is Livigno Lake, which expanded the earlier artificial lake. During the winter it is frozen turning into a stunning mirror of the surrounding mountains.

Throughout the summer the still reservoir waters become the ideal place for water sports. Here you can rent kayaks with 1 or 2 seats, paddleboats with up to 5 seats perfect for a family outing, as well as classic rowboats or, for the more adventurous, stand-up paddles. You can indulge yourself with a leisurely cruise on the crystal-clear waters and reach the Floating Island in the heart of the lake.

THE STELVIO NATIONAL PARK

The Stelvio Park has been created to preserve the ecosystem for future generations and covers 50,000 hectares belonging to six municipalities in Alta Valtellina. Kings of these areas are the deer, the ibex, and the bearded vulture — the majestic bird of prey that use to nest here.

LIVIGNO, HISTORY TRACES

The first history trace can be found in Livigno’s name itself, which probably stems from a mix of Ladin and German and means "snow avalanche." The second trace is to be found along the village or valley; you can see it firsthand. There are still architectural traces of the old Livigno dwellings: they were built of wood, often with farm buildings on the corner and roofs with larch planks to keep the snow from sliding off.

Livigno became popular as a winter tourist destination only after the annual opening of the Foscagno Pass in 1952 and in the late 1960s thanks to the opening of the Gallo tunnel, which allowed tourists from northern Europe to reach the valley. Before then there were few traces of tourism, but the story about the short stay of the Divisionist painter Giovanni Segantini and his partner Bice Bugatti is still being told.

ANY QUESTIONS? HERE'S THE ANSWER: MUS!

Those who come to Livigno spend the first few days looking at the nature around them, enjoying the sun and snow, and shopping along its open-air mall. But then the desire of answering questions of children and those who want to know more about this territory comes out.

These questions can be answered by the MUS! Museum of Livigno and Trepalle. We highly recommend visiting it: you’ll get into an ancient dwelling of local tradition, and you’ll experience life in the past figuring out the Livigno of today.
