NATIONS: 15

EVENTS: 43

ATHLETS: 246 (all men)

This torch is an exact reproduction of the Olympic Torch of 1896, the first modern age Olympic Games. The torch was produced in solid bronze in Greece. Every night after the day of Games was completed, there were torch-light processions, bands played the different national hymns, and the foreign sports teams received ovations and cheers from the university students.

The Games officially started at the end of the opening ceremony, before the swearing of the King and Queen, when the lighting of the torch took place. The games took place from April 6th to April 15th 1896 in Athene. Among the athletes we remember our countryman Giuseppe Rivabella. The games were opened by George I, king of Greece (1845-1913).
