DUTY FREE ALLOWANCE
Since the Middle Ages, Livigno has enjoyed special tax privileges, claimed on several occasions due to both its isolated condition and the population's state of need.
The real turning point came at the beginning of the Napoleonic period, when the customs line was set back from the political border for a simple calculation of convenience.
During the Austrian government and in the Kingdom of Italy, various conventions were established that were advantageous to the small municipality, such as the possibility of importing and exporting goods to and from the neighbouring Tyrol without paying customs duties, and the extension of the duty-free allowance to state monopoly goods.
Finally, at the beginning of the 20th century, national law regulated the non-customs status, which was confirmed in the Republic and subsequent EU legislation. Partly due to this special status, rapid economic development has taken place over the last fifty years, which has greatly influenced the life and appearance of the territory.
Livigno duty-free zone
Livigno is known not only for its active soul and unspoilt nature, but also because it is a non-customs zone and therefore enjoys special tax breaks and concessions. This means that a whole range of goods can be purchased at advantageous prices: petrol, cigarettes and various tobaccos, alcoholic beverages, perfumes, photographic and optical equipment, computers and electronic instruments, leather garments and furs... Exempt goods may be purchased in limited quantities, while for other goods a minimum amount is set, above which the purchase must be declared to the Foscagno or Swiss customs.
