Next to it there is the writing in Cyrillic «Moskau Olympiade 1980». The fuel used was liquid gas mixed with butane and propane. The torch is composed by an alloy steel, plated gold and silver. The Olympic Games of Moscow went down to history for the famous boycott of the US and for the invasion of Afghanistan by the URSS in 1979. While Leonid Brezhnev inaugurated the Olympic Games, Jimmy Carter was following the boycotted games from the US. Legendary are the golds taken by Pietro Mennea, Sara Simeoni and Maurizio Damilano in athletics, who allowed Italy to collect 8 golds. Aleksandr Dityatin of Russia earned medals in every men's gymnastics event to become the first athlete to win eight medals at one Olympic Games. Super-heavyweight Teófilo Stevenson of Cuba became the first boxer to win the same division three times, and Gerd Wessig of East Germany became the first male high jumper to break the world record at the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games were held in a socialist country for the first time ever.
