The designer of the torch was inspired, for its production, by a reservoir and the torch is mainly composed of an aluminium alloy. Composed of stainless steel and coated aluminium, it weighs 460gr. The logo, designed by Kazumasa Nagai’s, symbolizes the rising sun, the snowflake and the Olympic rings. The first Winter Games organized in Asia were opened by His Majesty Emperor Hirohito. Yukio Kasaya, Akitsugu Konno and Seiji Aochi gave the Japanese public a triple in ski jumping, on the 70m jump. It was the first Japanese Olympic title in the Winter Games. The hockey tournament took place without the Canadian team. Since 1969 they had been slighting international competitions as a protest against the widespread secret activity in the USSR and Eastern Europe.
