From 2 to 5 September, the most extreme challenge of the XTRI World Tour returns, with the race starting at dawn on Friday 4 September: 3.8 km of swimming, 195 km of cycling and 42.2 km of running, for a total elevation gain of more than 5,000 metres. An event deeply rooted in the local area, capturing its true spirit through high-altitude landscapes and iconic Alpine passes.

1 Settembre 2026 -  At 1,816 metres above sea level, nestled in the Alps on the border between Italy and Switzerland, Livigno is preparing to welcome one of the most extreme endurance events in the world.

From 2 to 5 September, the valley will once again become the home of the ICON Xtreme Triathlon, the toughest race on the XTRI World Tour, the international circuit that brings together some of the most iconic triathlons on the planet, from the mountains of Norway to the peaks of the Himalayas.

Now in its tenth year, the 2026 edition will start at dawn on Friday 4 September, following a week of preparation including briefings, course recces, familiarisation with the lake and a guided meditation session on the eve of the race.

If ICON can go where no other race can, it is because Livigno provides the unique setting that makes such a challenge possible. Few places in the world bring together, in one destination, everything an event of this scale demands: a constant altitude of over 1,800 metres, an amphitheatre of major Alpine passes all accessible from a single base, a lake that becomes part of the stage, world-class infrastructure for training and recovery, and a strong culture of hospitality built around the needs of athletes.

It is the same environment chosen every year by professional athletes and national teams for altitude training — and one that ICON takes to its most extreme expression.

It is no coincidence that the course runs through some of the most iconic places in the area. After the swim in Lake Livigno, athletes cross the Forcola, Bernina and Fuorn passes, take on the legendary 48 hairpin bends of the Stelvio Pass — the second-highest paved mountain pass in Europe — and return via the Foscagno Pass: 195 kilometres and more than 5,000 metres of elevation gain on roads that have shaped cycling history. The race concludes with the marathon, climbing from Trepalle to 3,000 metres at Carosello 3000, the highest finish on the entire XTRI World Tour. In total: 3.8 kilometres of swimming, 195 kilometres of cycling and 42.2 kilometres of running — with Livigno’s geography becoming, section by section, the race course itself.

And once again, it is the landscape that defines the event’s most powerful moment. At dawn on Friday, while darkness still surrounds Lake Livigno, athletes enter the water to the rhythm of drums, with flames reflected across the surface. It is a powerful, almost ancestral ritual, suspended between silence and adrenaline, in which the start of the race becomes inseparable from the landscape that hosts it.

ICON, after all, is much more than a race. It requires months of preparation and the constant presence of a dedicated support team, accompanying each athlete throughout the entire day: a challenge in which individual performance is always the result of a collective journey. Livigno plays its part in this story too, with a community and a destination that welcome athletes and teams as true protagonists. Every finisher is celebrated as such; the following day, the awards ceremony and the traditional Pasta Party will bring the 2026 edition to a close.

With events such as the ICON Xtreme Triathlon, Livigno continues to strengthen its role as an international benchmarkfor endurance sports and elite training: a destination that has made altitude, the mountains and hospitality its most authentic language. Because, once again, some extraordinary achievements can only be born in places capable of making them possible.
