After last weekend in Santa Caterina Valfurva, the athletes of the cross-country Italian Cup are ready to face a new appointment on Friday 3 December in Livigno. A long-awaited race, because most of the Italian Cup cross-country skiers have prepared themselves before the start of the season on the slopes of the Piccolo Tibet.
On Friday, the challenges will focus on a women's 10 km and a men's 15 km in skating on the Molin slope, covered with snow thanks to the recent snowfalls that have whitened and further embellished Livigno and the surrounding mountains. There is, it is true, the concomitance with the World Cup and the European Cup of Goms, so some of the protagonists of the last stage of the Coppa Italia Gamma will be absent, but there will be many important athletes of the military sports groups. The registrations are not yet closed and foreigners could be added, because the race Livigno is raised to Open International test.
lenia Defrancesco, second in the Italian Cup in the Valtellina challenge last Sunday and therefore the favourite with the absence of Elisa Brocard, who flew in Lillehammer, will compete with conviction. It will not be easy for the Italian Army athlete. It is legitimate to expect the new FFGG Veronica Silvestri, from Livigno, to make an impact at home, but Valentina Maj, Chiara De Zolt Ponte, Sarah Hutter, Emilie Jeantet and Federica Cassol are also in the running for the top positions. On the men's side there will be two athletes who will want to get some rocks off their shoes after Santa Caterina, such as Michael Abram (CS Esercito) and Giandomenico Salvadori (FFGG), with Dietmar Nöckler (FFOO), Mirco Bertolina and Paolo Fanton both from CS Carabinieri, and Maicol Rastelli (Esercito) also competing. Replicating the interest of local athletes is Nicolò Cusini (Army), who together with Veronica Silvestri is part of the prestigious Livigno Team, as well as the young up-and-coming Giacomo Ponti.
All indications are that once again Livigno will see some great things on the well-groomed slopes, as always. The races on Friday will start at 9 am with the women's race and then the men's one.
