Designed by Lee Woo-Sung and produced by Korea Explosives Co. Ltd, it is made of copper, plastic and leather. The transfer of the Flame followed Korea’s tradition, passing through the country from east to west in order to symbolize the harmony and the balance between the two opposed poles. The torchbearers carried the Flame wearing their traditional costumes. The Emblem represents the samtaeguk, a traditional Korean motif, a key symbol to the Korean people and used in architecture and handcraft as a decorative theme. It can be read as a movement that goes from the inside to the outside. Inside it symbolizes the union of the worldwide population for the Olympic Games, and outside it represents the advance of peace. 20.899 torchbearers (including the assistants) have traveled the 15.250 km of the torch relay. The most famous torchbearer was Sohn Kee Chung, chosen because he won the 1936 marathon in Berlin with the Japanese flag. Memorable are the 6 gold medals won by Kristin Otto, the 5 of Matthew Briondi, the doping of Johnson, who had to hand his medal over to Carl Lewis and was expelled from the Olympic Village and the mind-blowing soundtrack of the Games, Withney Houston’s “One moment in time”. Table tennis makes its first appearance in the Olympic program. Tennis returns as a medal sport after a hiatus of 64 years
